Where Do You Start?

So, now that I’ve signed up for the 2012 Canadian Death Race, it’s time to start thinking about training. The longest run I have done in the last year+ was the St.Albert Marathon in May 2011.

It feels like I’m starting from scratch!

Lets start with my current training level. I run in Edmonton, Alberta, and the only runs I am currently doing are my Sunday long runs. Last Sunday I ran 18 km.

If the weather co-operates I plan on doing some short (5 km) weekday runs and slowly increasing the Sunday runs.

About Mike

I have ran the Canadian Death Race three times, 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2011 I took a year off and am back in 2012. View all posts by Mike →

    Hello,
First time Death Race contestant and i need some help! I run 10km 3 times a week , 5km 2 times a week and a 20km on sunday…..I know I can run but i’ve been told marathon running is nothing like running hills – which is true – so besides incline training and increasing my distance, do you have any training tips? Oh and i’m in the team relay so i wont be doing this alone but like anyone on a team, i dont want to fail or let down so i need to be in TIP TOP shape! Any ideas you can give me?
    Thank you!!!

      Hi Marie,

I think the type of training required for a team member will heavily depend on the leg/legs you are running. Legs 2 and 4 have a lot of hills, where leg 3 is mostly declining with a rough terrain. It sounds like you already have a solid base. If you aren’t doing any hills I would start with 3 or 4 repeats then add 1 per week up to around 10. If you are used to running on pavement, I would try to add trails as this will help with your knees and ankles.

      Good Luck

      Mike
